Voices of Resistance: Stories from Latina Women in Florida

In 2024, Florida made national headlines for legislation that focused on reducing reproductive rights, silencing public school discussions about LGBTQ+ people, and championing aggressive immigration enforcement policies. News media about Florida’s politics sounded alarms for what could occur nationally and portrayed the state in a satirical light akin to the “Florida man” memes. Such reporting, however, failed to capture the large, proud, and strong, resistance movement that pushes back against harmful state politics.

In this exhibit, we invite you to listen to stories of Latina women in Florida who actively resist and combat harmful politics in different ways. This movement comprises an intersectional coalition of 3 Latinx immigrant women, one trans and one queer, who fight for a brighter sunshine state. We hope their stories contribute to your understanding of the complexity of Florida, and provide you hope for what an intersectional resistance movement can look in other contexts.
